I have had associations with Scripture Union since the age of six so it is a real pleasure to be working as the Volunteers Coordinator, supporting those involved in our varied volunteer ministry. I became a Christian on a beach mission and attended numerous holidays. I think it’s because I have benefited so much from the work of the movement, that I have such a passion to see others encountering the good news of Jesus through Scripture Union. It is a delightful task to be able to assist leaders as they engage teams in work that might only last a few days or weeks but which I know, from my personal experience, will have long-lasting impact.
The Scripture Union volunteer ministry programme is a diverse one as we try to reach people in different contexts. Recently I have been working to support summer mission events in England and Wales as well as the Frontline events we organise in partnership with other Scripture Union movements in places such as Slovakia and Hungary. These activities have a fantastic heritage but it is also important that we continue to develop the events to connect with children, young people and families today. I have also been working to develop and grow X:site, a bi-monthly event for children in a variety of areas and to promote the work of Scripture Union internationally. Meanwhile I have been volunteering as a holiday leader.
Before joining Scripture Union I studied for three years at Moorlands Bible College and I am aware of how I use what I learnt in my current role. Before college I worked for London Underground and the transferability of those experiences is perhaps less obvious! Thankfully, being involved in this work is an enjoyable challenge and continually reminds me of the amazing commitment of volunteers serving with Scripture Union and the variety of ways God uses to enable people to hear about himself.
