Volunteer Ministry Team Leader

Simon Barker

I am the Volunteer Ministry Team Leader with Scripture Union,  overseeing the various programmes that draw on volunteers and with particular responsibility for matters of training, strategy and policies. Having become a Christian on a Scripture Union holiday as a teenager myself, I am aware of what a life-changing ministry these events can be and am thrilled to be able to play a part in their future development. I am definitely at my happiest when I am directly involved in running these events or out visiting to offer support and encouragement to our leaders and teams. We are a volunteer movement and I am always excited and humbled in equal measure by the passion and enthusiasm – as well as the skills and commitment – that these people bring.

More recently I have been able to help develop the Lifepath schools event, running programmes on John Newton and John Bunyan and am very keen to see this initiative grow more widely. I am also a key link in seeing the work at Great Wood – Scripture Union’s log cabin site in Somerset – expand not least to the school groups that attend during term-time. I am also on the Board of CCI, the umbrella organisation for all Christian organisations that run holidays and for Christian conference and outdoor activity centres and am always thrilled to hear how God is at work in so many lives through this ministry.

I live in Olney, Bucks – home to the oldest pancake race in the country and where John Newton wrote Amazing Grace – with my wife Debbie, and two children Jamie and Ellen. We are all involved in the Baptist church there and in the spare time I have, I enjoy travelling, reading and a variety of sports including cycling, swimming and especially football. I am a big Leeds United fan –someone has to be!
