Sarah Smart

Development Worker (Church & Community) based in the South East

Having grown up in a non-Christian family, I became a Christian when I was 15 on a Scripture Union mission in my home town of Deal in Kent. I knew when I left school I wanted to work with children, so I went to college to do a BTEC diploma in childhood studies. I was all set to go to university to train as a teacher when God started speaking to me about full-time children's ministry in a Christian setting. After much fighting I eventually conceded that God's plans were probably the best ones (!), and in 2002 I started to study at Moorlands College in Dorset for a BA in Applied Theology focusing on family and community studies. Through people I met and opportunities I was given during this time, my experience of children's ministry grew and my desire to see children active in a personal relationship with God was developed.

In 2006 I began working as a children's pastor for a church in Gravesend and then, after moving house, changing jobs and getting married all in the same week, I joined Scripture Union's staff in January 2008 as evangelist for Kent, Surrey and Sussex. In 2010 I changed to my present role as Development Worker for the South East with a focus on Church and Community.  I am really passionate about seeing children and young people (particularly those aged 5-11) move on in their relationships with God, and seeing the church make a difference in their lives;  it is with this focus in mind that I am really excited to have the opportunity to work with Staff, Associates and Volunteers across the South-East region as we see God's plans unfold
