In September 2011 Emily Finch joined our regional team on a three year student placement. Emily writes:
"Hi! I’m Emily, I’m 20 years old and I’m from Filey on the North East Coast of Yorkshire.
My involvement with SU began when I was at Sixth Form College. I was invited to come on a summer holiday camp called Geared For Growth. I enjoyed it so much that I have been volunteering with SU ever since!
After Sixth Form College I went out to Perth, Western Australia for 6 months where I was the Schools Intern for Scripture Union WA. I then went on to study philosophy at York University but after a year I strongly felt God calling me to return to Filey to do youth work there.
I am now studying at St Johns College, Nottingham doing a degree in Youth and Community Work with Practical Theology with the Centre for Youth Ministry which I am enjoying a lot!
Being away from SU for a year was far too long so I have chosen SU as the placement on my course. I therefore represent SU through the youth work I am doing in Filey, as well as helping at events and leading on camps, such as Breakthrough!
So far my time has been spent setting up and running youth groups, school groups and youth nights. I absolutely love it!
My faith really began to be important to me after going on a summer camp when I was 14. Through it I met many young people and leaders who really inspired me, and just over that 10 day camp I grew in my faith so much. It is because of experiences like this that I have been able to see first hand how essential good youth work is. Remembering the way in which I was invested in as a young person has motivated my work with young people in Filey."
