Jen and Sarah join the North East and Yorkshire team
In the North East and Yorkshire region, we have always believed in the value of investing in young leaders and through the years we have had a number of young people spend 6-9 months with us to serve God in this area.
In recent years our summer programme has developed new models of outreach based on working in partnership with local communities. Here in the North East & Yorkshire we have been pioneering work in this area through regular local initiatives and summer activity weeks.
It is through involvement in those activities that Jen Barclay has felt God’s call to take a year out from her studies to work as part of the regional Scripture Union team, based on Tyneside. Jen has just completed the fourth year of her medical studies and so is using this opportunity to take a year to serve God, with a focus on working alongside the churches in Longbenton and Byker.
Sarah Prentice is another young person who has felt called to spend some time as an intern this year. Here is what she had to say:
Hi, I'm Sarah. I'm from Filey in North Yorkshire. I'm nineteen years old and am spending this year doing a Scripture Union internship.I found out about Scripture Union when I was sixteen and my youth leader introduced me to 'Breakthrough', an SU holiday. On the holiday I was introduced to a lot of new things, and afterwards I started to get involved as a junior leader volunteering on weekends and after college.
When I left college I got a job at a nursery and loved it at first but after a while I felt that God saw other gifts and potential in me. I started to enjoy nursery less and volunteering with youth more. I decided to spend my day off having a bible study and through that my faith grew massively. Over the months I found it harder to ignore what God had planned for me so took the leap and here I am, taking a year out to be a youth intern for my local church!
How does the intern scheme work?
Scripture Union's intern scheme provides the ideal way for anyone to take a year out to serve in a partnership arrangement with Scripture Union and (usually) their local church. It's a great way to have lots of fun, meet new people, face loads of challenges and, at the end of it all, have vital experiences that will equip you for whatever lies ahead!
Interns are normally based at home serving their local church and/or working with a Scripture Union Associate Trust. Alongside this, they get involved in wider regional projects such as Lifepath, X:site and holidays as well as working with SU staff in the region. The global nature of the Scripture Union movement (which serves God in over 120 countries) also provides the opportunity for an international placement as part of an intern's year.
The scheme is open to young people taking a year out (e.g. before or after university), but may equally appeal to those of any age who are at a turning point in life - maybe wanting to explore different avenues for Christian service but with limited experience of Christian ministry outside of their own church.
We arrange for each intern to have an appropriate mentor as part of the scheme and, further to this, each receives training from Cliff College, where they study for a Cliff College certificate in Christian Life and Mission.
