Development Worker (Schools) based in Sheffield
I became a Christian when I was 14 years old, in a classroom one night after school. Because I experienced God so powerfully then, there has never been any doubt in my mind that God can and does touch children's and young people's lives in school. From that moment I knew that one day I would communicate the gospel in schools. After university I worked part-time for a church in Sheffield developing their schools work. Before long I was so busy working in schools that I had to give up my other part-time job to work full-time for the church.
In March 2004 I joined Scripture Union as their schools worker for South Yorkshire. I have the privilege of not only visiting lots of schools with the good news of Jesus but also training and encouraging people in local churches to do the same. In school I use a range of approaches with children and young people: from taking assemblies and lessons, through running prayer labyrinths, to one-to-one work with pupils from difficult backgrounds. Schools today present a fantastic opportunity for churches to reach out to children and young people from their local communities. If you are interested in serving God in this way, I have loads of ideas! My hope is that as many churches as possible across South Yorkshire will take up the challenge to be a positive representation of Jesus and Christianity to local pupils.
