Development Worker (Schools) based in Tyneside
I was born in Kent but moved to the North-East to go to university, where I became a Christian during my first term. After graduating, I spent two years working for my church and then decided to become a teacher. I taught geography in Washington for ten years and during that time was able to run a Christian club, take assemblies and speak at Christmas and Easter services. I am married to Sarah and we have two children, Joel and Hannah.
Since joining Scripture Union in 2002 I have always been keen to support Christians in schools, be they pupils, teachers, other staff or visitors. My work also involves me in helping churches form stronger links with their local schools. There are many great ways that churches can do this and I am keen to share this vision with them, train them, resource them and put them in contact with others doing similar work. Many Christian pupils find it very hard to stand up for their faith at school and feel the pressure to conform. Whenever possible, I try to help them see that God wants to use and equip them. I am involved in leading several Scripture Union holidays – and see these as a fantastic area of ministry to young people – and am also part of a team producing SchoolsLive resources for secondary school Christian groups. These provide anyone leading a group with lots of meeting outlines and ideas, thus strengthening the Christian presence in many schools.
