Evangelist for London
I have a long connection with Scripture Union, coming to faith as a teenager on a residential holiday and continuing the connection as a holiday team volunteer for seventeen years before joining the staff. I became the London evangelist after two years of theological studies at London Bible College (now London School of Theology), following training as a teacher and a degree in medical microbiology. I am on the leadership team of a Baptist church plant in the docklands of east London.
Since joining SU's staff, I have had an immensely interesting and privileged time serving, equipping and supporting churches within the M25. This has included training events for Sunday School teachers or those running holiday or midweek clubs, taking services (both all-age and those where children withdraw for Sunday activities), visiting midweek groups, assisting in running missions and holiday clubs, and running youth or children's programmes on church weekends away. I am involved in the residential holidays programme, in writing all-age church resources and material for TheGRID and WordLive, and in a group looking at how SU's work touches people of other faiths. This last has led to some interesting opportunities in multi-faith contexts in exploring Christian holy writings with Muslim young people and 'myth busting' about Christianity with Jewish young people. I am actively involved in the Lifepath project, having served on teams at Durham, Jervaulx, Southend and Havering.
Apart from two years studying and a probationary teaching year in Bletchley, I have always lived in London. For most of the last 19 years this has been in east London, an area I love. London is busy and thriving, but many people seem to be driven, rather than led by relationships. I hope that I can help individuals and churches to build relationships and work cooperatively with each other to share the light.
