Scripture Union Swaziland are flexible on what time of year it receives it volunteers, however, the majority of placements start in the January of each year and last between 6 months to a year.
Scripture Union works throughout Swaziland; however the Action Abroad placement will based in Mbabane, Swaziland's capital city. Swaziland is a land-locked monarchy of around 900,000 inhabitants, nestled in the beautiful mountains of south-eastern Africa. A country of tremendous beauty, but its beauty cannot mask the tragic realities facing many of its population.
Background
With 40% of the population HIV positive, the average life expectancy of a male adult is 35 years old - a heartbreaking average. The AIDS pandemic is having devastating effects on the society as a whole, businesses and families. The causes of this devastating virus can be traced to unmonitored hospital conditions, infected needle-sharing, and most significantly, a culture of unofficial polygamy which goes largely unchallenged in rural areas. It's into this reality that Scripture Union brings a message of hope and health for the youth of the nation. Scripture Union has extensive experience in running dynamic, relevant, Life skills courses aimed at intervening in the relentless spread of AIDS and other social ills prevalent in this society.
What you will be doing
Partnering with UNICEF, to help deliver life skill courses educating young people and children about the HIV virus, and the social factors that contribute to its spread. These courses highlight the biological, epidemiological and social-cultural risk factors that facilitate the rapid spread of HIV, as well as highlighting positive efforts to control risks and reduce spread of infection.
You will also work closely with staff and volunteers to help co-ordinate the schools ministry including weekly bible clubs, as well as running Christian camps, involving sports, life skills, worship bible study.
Scripture Union Swaziland is committed to see you develop spiritually through your placement and has a network in place to ensure you are mentored and encouraged spiritually throughout your placement.
How much will it cost?
As a volunteer you need to arrange your own support, which includes the cost of the air fare, accommodation, food and internal travel.
You will stay will a local Christian family known to Scripture Union. Whilst on camps, accommodation will be provided on site.
