Isle of Man

The Isle of Man lies in the Irish Sea, between England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. The island is a British Crown dependency, but it does not belong to the UK or the EU. It has its own parliament, laws, traditions, culture and cuisine and is truly stunning! The SUMT placement will be based in the village of Port St Mary; however there is opportunity to work throughout the island.

Background

SUMT has been working on the island for the last 20 years, aiming to:

Support Christian education

  • Support Christians in education
  • Bridge the gap between churches and schools

What you will be doing

As part of the SUMT team, based in Port St Mary, you would act as a practical resource to the churches and schools on the island by being involved in schools work, including

  • Assemblies – developing high quality assembly material, this is then ‘toured’ among secondary schools on the island.
  • Christian Union clubs – supporting those Christians in school who wish to express their faith by meeting together.
  • 'Just Looking’ clubs – supporting clubs that enable pupils to look into the Christian faith.
  • School lessons – delivering RE lessons in secondary schools.
  • Networking events – coordinating events which network the CU groups together from all around the island.
  • Leadership training – training Christian Union leaders.
  • Mission fortnight – SUMT run a mission every summer, attracting over 200 4- to 18-year–olds, who attend activities including games, crafts, drama, interactive teaching, music and outings.

Volunteers would also work alongside the local churches to:

  • be part of a pioneering new work;
  • develop embryonic work with them;
  • help to train and develop existing work;
  • resource all of the churches through practical (people) and physical (resources) methods.

One of the great strengths of this scheme is that it is very much tailor made to you, your gifts and what you would like to get involved in. For example, someone with a heart for global issues could spend one day a week with the One World Centre, or if your heart was families, time with Care for the Family could be arranged.

How much would it cost?

Scripture Union will arrange flights, accommodation, insurance and internal travel, however it is your responsibility to raise funds to cover this.
