Hungary, with a population of around 10 million, is an exciting country to visit. Budapest, its capital on the River Danube, is a beautiful city and a centre with many tourist attractions. In the last century Hungary was part of the Warsaw Pact – the communist dominated countries of Eastern/Central Europe, but has emerged since the 1990’s into a thriving democracy with significant opportunities for cross cultural mission.

Scripture Union in Hungary (Szentiras Szovetseg) has grown into a vibrant young  movement  over recent years. One of their main frontline activities is the running of children’s holiday clubs through the month of July, each year. SU Hungary has invited team members who are native English speakers, to assist on these clubs for one or more weeks. ‘It was a fantastic opportunity to explore another country while serving God!’ said one Frontline volunteer. ‘I felt immersed in the Hungarian culture and language because I was living with the local team for three weeks. The Hungarians I met were so friendly and helpful and the children were all so eager to learn. It was an absolutely marvellous experience! And I made so many friends.’

You don’t need to speak any Hungarian to join the team! You will be asked to help with both practical aspects of running the holiday clubs and share in teaching both conversational English and Bible stories and songs. But your love for children (mostly in the 7-13 age bracket) and a desire to share Jesus with them are the two greatest qualifications you will need. Explore the SU Hungary website (it can be read in English) and if you want any more details use the Contact button below.

In 2019 we will need around 20-25 volunteers from England & Wales to help run the 12 or so children’s holiday clubs in July. If you apply later than 15 June, please go the  and apply direct to SU Hungary.

Dates for 2019:

Week 1: 29 June to 6 July – Volunteer applications CLOSED

Week 2: 6–13 July – Volunteer applications CLOSED

Week 3: 13–20 July – Volunteer applications CLOSED

Week 4: 20–27 July – Volunteer applications CLOSED

You can volunteer for more than one week (we'd be very happy if you did!). When completing the application form please indicate which week(s) you are available.

The price of this mission covers your accommodation, most food and transport whilst in Hungary as well as the costs to SU Hungary and SU England and Wales of caring for you. If the cost is too high for you but you are keen to go then please do use the link below to get in touch with us as there are ways to receive help with the cost.

There will be a Frontline Hungary training day on 16th June 2019 at Scripture Union National Office in Milton Keynes. The time is to be confirmed. This is an important part of being on team. We try to hold it in a location central to those who are on team.

Whilst we will accept people on the team who can't attend the training day our experience is that those who attend are more prepared for the experience and able to enjoy their time in Hungary.
