Media release: What a Year!
Scripture Union toasts growth in holidays and missions.
Date: 04/01/2006
Scripture Union is celebrating one of the most exciting years of its popular holidays and missions programme. Recent figures confirmed that more than ten thousand children, young people and volunteers took part in an event during 2005, an increase of ten per cent. But the numbers were of secondary importance to the many amazing stories of God at work in people’s lives.
Nathan Norris, Scripture Union’s Holidays Programme manager was overwhelmed by the feedback. ‘Once again, God has blessed the holiday programme abundantly. It’s such an encouragement to hear from the leaders how God has worked in the lives of children, young people and team members.’
Scripture Union holidays and missions programme now boasts nearly 150 events, with activities happening all throughout the year. There is a wide range of holidays on offer – water sports and adventure holidays, events specifically designed for those with Special Needs, holidays to celebrate the New Year and events for young people to prepare for and relax after exams! Scripture Union missions have also developed, with teams of volunteers now running the children’s programmes at national Christian events such as Spring Harvest, Baptist Assembly and Keswick and organising social action events in addition to the traditional beach events started by Josiah Spiers in 1868.
The 2006 brochures have just been released, with an increased number of events designed to attract even more children and young people aged 8 to 18, and volunteers. This year there is a new section for those who like to go to festivals and more easter and New Year holidays have been added. Missions Programme Manager Clare Luxton is excited about what God has in store for 2006. ‘There’s even more on offer this year and I’m sure there’s something to suit everyone!’
