Media release: Tsunami action

Quick action by Scripture Union editors enabled more than 9,000 leaders to take their Sunday groups through discussion and prayer following the tsunami disaster in south east Asia.

The tsunami came at a time when groups using SU’s Light material were starting a series on Noah and the flood. Editors posted additional topical notes on the Light website and sent an alert to leaders by email.

Vicki Warwick, one of Scripture Union’s Light editors, said: ‘The fact that our series leads up to Noah and the flood gave us an opportunity to discuss the difficult issues around the tsunami disaster. We wanted to help leaders prepare for their sessions in such a way that their groups could apply their faith to current world issues.’

One group leader, who used the additional Light material, said: ‘There are no easy answers but our young people had the opportunity to discuss the situation and voice their own questions.’

This week editors will post more material on the Light website to help group leaders continue to work through issues relating to the tsunami disaster.
