Searching for SUbstance?

This month Scripture Union launched SUbstance, a new interactive resource for 14- to 18-year-olds, to enable young people to look at the Bible at a deeper level than other resources. It is the first youth group resource tailor-made by SU for this age group in over ten years.

SUbstance is a series of books each covering two modules of a four-year discipleship course. It aims to blend fun activities with in-depth Bible exploration and challenging application. ‘The emphasis is firmly on taking young people deeper and helping them nurture their faith and equip their action’ said Phil Green, writer and editor of SUbstance.

As well as being a printed resource, there is additional web-content, such as animations and quizzes. Each session also gives young people the opportunity to respond in a variety of ways, including writing a journal page.

Each book contains two modules written by experienced youth workers. Every module includes a variety of ideas that can be used and adapted to create sessions suitable to the group.

‘When developing SUbstance we wanted to create a user-friendly resource that would help any youth leader,’ continues Phil Green ‘from the full-time 'professional' paid youth pastor, to the mum of three children who gives up her Sunday evening to lead the youth group and has very little time to prepare.

‘The ideas are designed to help relate the Word of God to situations that young people face every day. It also aims to equip them with skills they will be able to use throughout their life when it comes to understanding the Bible, interpreting it, and applying it to life.’

The plan is to release three volumes of SUbstance each year. This year Volume one: Creation! is released in June, Volume two: Kingdom? is out in August, while volume three will be published in October.
