Scripture Union, a trusted provider of holiday club material, has launched Showstoppers!, a new holiday club programme for five- to eleven-year-olds with a creative arts focus.
Following the success of 2008’s Champion’s Challenge and Waste Watchers from 2007, Showstoppers! continues Scripture Union’s commitment to providing churches with good quality resources for holiday clubs, and follow-up resources to grow church contact with children all year round.
The theatrical theme of Showstoppers! allows the use of a daily creative arts workshop to help children explore the day's Bible passage through dance, drama, music, art and photography. Two levels of workshop are given, one guided and one more open-ended, so that leaders with different levels of experience can get all the help they need, as well as craft and games options for leaders who choose not to do the workshops.
Showstoppers! uses five of the Must Know Stories, Scripture Union’s family of books containing ten stories from the Bible that should be known by everyone because of their cultural relevance, as the biblical material for the week: creation, David and Goliath, Daniel, Jesus' birth and Jesus' death and the resurrection. God’s great plan is the overarching biblical theme that will be followed during the week as the children encounter these stories.
Alex Taylor, Scripture Union’s Commissioning Editor responsible for holiday club ministries, explains why Showstoppers! has a creative arts theme: ‘The success of Scripture Union’s creative arts holidays was the inspiration: Ruth Wills, the author of Showstoppers! is the leader of MAD – Music, Art and Drama – a holiday for eight- to 11-year-olds. Showstoppers! was devised to give holiday club leaders this extra creative arts option. Scripture Union endeavours to help people explore different ways of engaging children with Bible stories.’
Showstoppers! is supported by the Showstoppers! DVD, containing extra resources for the club, and Showstoppers! Cast List which includes all the Bible text needed for the holiday club, as well as activities for the small group Bible discovery time.
Showstoppers! will be followed up by a new resource for a weekly club, part of Scripture Union’s eye level project to create new ways for churches to connect with unchurched children. Called Dress Rehearsal, it covers the other five Must Know Stories – Noah's ark , The 10 commandments, the feeding of over 5000, the good Samaritan and the prodigal son – to form a programme on living God’s way.
