Media release: Schoolday time travel
Pupils get a glimpse of the life and faith of Pilgrim Fathers
Date: 16/06/2006
Nearly 300 children from eight local primary schools will travel back in time to the era of the Pilgrim Fathers, thanks to Lifepath, a multi-media educational experience that looks at life and faith of the 17th century.
Lifepath, hosted at St Wilfrid’s Church, Scrooby, from June 27 to 29, will give pupils and their teachers the opportunity to explore themes of living, praying, serving and believing, on a ‘pilgrim journey’ that takes them through workshops blending drama, music creative activities, acts of worship and discovery.
It will all be linked to the life of William Brewster, the Scrooby postmaster in whose home the Pilgrim Fathers met in secret before leaving for Holland. This year is the 400th anniversary of their fi rst meeting.
Around 30 volunteers working with the joint organisers - Scripture Union, the Doncaster Schools Workers Trust (DSWT) and Sheffield Diocese - will be on hand to act as ‘pilgrim guides’ and to run workshops. The event, which links with schools’ religious education curriculum, has been co-ordinated by Scripture Union’s South Yorkshire schools worker Sue Brown.
Sue said: ‘This is a great opportunity for young people to explore life and faith by looking at the lifepath of a notable local figure in history. It’ll be fun and enjoyable, and it’s part of their RE. Importantly, the day will give them a chance to consider their own lifepaths.’
Sue said the co-ordinating team were grateful to the Vicar of St Wilfrid’s, the Rev Richard Spray, for making the church available for Lifepath. ‘It’s so good for today’s children to be able to make links with historical people of faith in the area where they lived, and on this important anniversary.’
Lifepath is one of a number of community initiatives started by Scripture Union, which works with schools across the country through its network of staff, associates and volunteers. The next Lifepath event takes place for north Yorkshire schools at Jervaulx Abbey from July 3 to 6.
