Media release: Keep it in the family
New resource signals latest development for Scripture Unions Families Ministry.
Date: 17/10/2006
Scripture Union is well known for its work with children and young people, and now families are set to benefit from the movement’s expertise and experience. Scripture Union’s Families Ministry aims to support church activities which enable work with local families, equips churches to allow families to flourish spiritually, and helps parents and carers create a home environment in which Christian faith can grow.
Increasing initiatives such as family-specific holidays and missions and training signal that Scripture Union’s Families Ministry is becoming a major part of the movement’s work. And now the first family-orientated published resource has just been released.
On the surface, the Family Activity Organiser 2007 is a page-a-week organiser for family members to record their plans each week. But it’s much more than that! On each page, there are a number of activities for a family to do together or individually, such as read a Bible story, talk with God, do a fun activity or learn a memory verse. The Bible passages follow Scripture Union’s Light curriculum for helpful continuity with Sunday services and groups.
Tearfund, the international charity that works to relieve suffering and offer hope to the world’s poorest people, has worked in conjunction with Scripture Union on the project, and on each week of the Family Activity Organiser 2007 there is a challenging focus on an international area in need.
Ro Willoughby, editor of the Family Activity Organiser 2007 hopes using the resource will help families get closer to God. ‘At a basic level, it will help families organise their schedules,’ says Ro. But we really hope that it will help them discover and grow with God by praying and reading the Bible together.
