Media release: Join the Massive Prayer Adventure!

Sarah uses cancer experience to write childrens book.
Date: 20/03/2006

Many authors use real-life stories as inspiration for books, but for Sarah Mayers’ Massive Prayer Adventure, published by Scripture Union in March, this is especially true.

Massive Prayer Adventure aims to help children aged 8 to 11 pray and build a relationship with God using quizzes, puzzles, creative ideas and case studies from the Bible to tackle deep questions such as ‘Does God answer prayer?’, ‘What does God sound like?’ and ‘How to pray when you’re afraid?’ These questions have been particularly significant to Sarah over the last three years as she has undergone treatment for bowel and then lung cancer.

Sarah, who attends New Frontiers’ New Life Church North in Milton Keynes and is currently undergoing the latest course of chemotherapy, has drawn on her experiences as a way of helping children communicate with God. ‘Talking to God is exciting,’ says Sarah. ‘There have been times during chemotherapy where I’ve had lots of questions and felt quite low, so finding new ways to pray and hearing God speak to me through it, has been a lifeline.’

A friend suggested that writing might be good therapy so Sarah set about writing Massive Prayer Adventure while on sick leave and completed the book in time for publication in March this year. ‘As I’ve written this book, God has brought something really positive out of a potentially negative experience. I really want the children who read it to pick up on the excitement I feel about talking and listening to God and benefit from my experiences. Children have the same questions as us and I hope the book will show them they can talk to God about absolutely anything, and discover that he hears and is interested in those prayers.’
