Christians and Muslims set to unite for social action in Birmingham
Date: 12/07/2004

Christian and Muslim teenage girls took part in an environmental project in Birmingham last Saturday (10 July). Faith and Young people, organised by Scripture Union, saw the girls tidy their local communities by picking up litter and planting new shrubs.

The girls came from Bordesley Green Girls School and Riverside Church in Moseley and it proved a worthwhile afternoon for all concerned. ‘It was good that we could meet and have fun with people of a different faith’ said Hannah. Musrat, another of the girls that took part said, ‘It’s good to know that we’re helping the environment and making Birmingham a better place.’

The Faith and Young people project has been running for 5 years and brings together young Christians and Muslims, giving them a chance to get to know people of a different faith. It provides an informal environment where they can look at issues relevant to both faith communities and helps the young people learn to express their beliefs in constructive and peaceful ways. Digby Horlock, teacher at Bordesley Green Girls School enthused ‘Any opportunity for Muslim girls to freely associate with Christian girls around a real-life issue for the local area can only be a good thing.’
