Charities Scripture Union and Bridgbuilder Schools Trust took lessons in Milton Keynes primary schools last week to celebrate the 10th World Book Day.
Scripture Union’s Commissioning Editor for Children and Youth Resources, Alex Taylor, took Year 5 and 6 pupils through the process of publishing a book, Scripture Union author Kathy Lee read from one of her books and Katy Nenadovic and Cathy Brunton-Spall from Bridgebuilder Schools Trust led interactive presentations about the Bible, including a Who wants to be a Millionaire? Bible quiz! The Bible had recently appeared in a Top ten books the nation can’t live without survey marking the tenth anniversary of World Book Day, which took place on 1 March.
Alex Taylor said ‘World Book Day is such a great way to get children interested in reading and it was great to team up with Bridgebuilder and the schools to fuel that interest. Hopefully I’ve met some of the best-selling writers of tomorrow!’
The day was just part of both schools’ World Book Day celebrations, with activities taking place all throughout the week.
‘We’ve had children making and acting out stories and we had a fancy dress day where pupils and staff came dressed as their favourite characters!’ said Julian Brown, a teacher at Broughton Fields Primary School. ‘Books bring out curiosity in children and spending a whole week doing these kinds of activities gets them really interested in the subject!’
