Developing Young People - 02/11/2008

They’re not yet adults, but they’re no longer children! Yet young people need to be valued and recognised for who they are. They need good role models within a church family who will give them responsibility and acceptance – and allow them to learn by their mistakes! Scripture Union works to develop resources to help those working with young people.

Sunday 2: Focus for today and throughout the week

Young Christians at school are constantly under pressure to conform, and living out their faith is tough. They need good friends, and they thrive on encouragement from church leaders, Christian workers, and their peers.

Monday 3

This generation of young Christians in Britain is, arguably, the first to grow up with people of other faiths as an ever-present reality. How the church disciples this and future generations to live out their faith is an urgent task. Andrew Smith, who heads Scripture Union’s Youth Encounter, and his colleagues help churches think about how they equip their young people to be confi dent Christians in this society.

Tuesday 4

Editor Phil Green is working on SUbstance, a new discipleship resource for 14 to 18s and their group leaders to help grapple with the big themes of the Bible and Christian life. The aim is to help leaders inspire young people in their walk with God and develop them as young leaders in the church. Three issues a year are planned and the first three have already been published.

Wednesday 5

GIVE THANKS for the freedom in Britain for students to run their own Christian groups at school and college. Running a Christian group isn’t easy: it’s difficult to lead and explain your faith to your peers. Scripture Union online resources help hundreds of leaders with this role, backed by training from SU workers.

Thursday 6

Junior team (14 to 17s) play a major part in many Scripture Union events – like missions, holidays and the X:site programme. Leaders work to encourage the nurture of their creativity, skills and gifts so that they can serve God with confidence.

Friday 7

The national Youthwork conferences in Southport (November 14-16) and in Eastbourne (November 21-23) are being supported by Scripture Union. The conference theme is Deepen: not only about training and equipping youth workers, but also a call to return to the Father to reinvest in the relationship from which youthwork flows.

Saturday 8: International focus

Sudan: Thank God for the partnership between Scripture Union and ACROSS, through which there is a new staff member to continue the ministry in the country. The hope is to extend the ministry beyond Juba to other parts of Southern and then Northern Sudan.
