Prayer and fasting

See First Tuesday Prayers - 7 February for this month's suggested prayer themes.

All Christians would agree that prayer is an essential part of Christian life and mission. It was a core part of Jesus’ life and Paul both tells the churches he is praying for them and invites prayer for himself.

  • That’s why Scripture Union has prayer supporters and invites them to pray for its work, regularly sending out news to stimulate prayer.
  • And it’s why staff and volunteer teams make prayer a priority.

Recently we’ve been challenged as we have looked at the Bible and prayed together about fasting. We have seen it as a normal part of Christian life in the teaching of Jesus and mission of the New Testament church. Sign up for our prayer e-news on the right of the page.

  • So we have come to see that if we are serious about the work that God has called us to, fasting should be part of our life together. Accompanied by prayer it is one of the ways in which God accomplishes his purposes in a hostile and difficult world.
  • As a result we have decided as a staff, Trustees and Council that we will make the first Tuesday of every month a day of prayer and fasting. This doesn’t mean that we will be praying all day – but it does mean that we shall be giving more time to prayer. And we have committed to fasting by at least giving up a midday meal (download a document containing more information on Prayer & Fasting

We invite anyone involved in any way with the work of Scripture Union, staff, associates, volunteers and supporters to join us  We see this as primarily an act of obedience to God and a means of coming closer to him. In this way we equip ourselves to serve him. It demonstrates that we are serious about his call on our lives and his mission in the world. It reaffirms our determination to serve him and is a means by which his power works in and through us.
