Children aged 5 and under are bubbling with life; everything is new, exciting and just waiting to be discovered. They are in the busiest time of their lives when they will learn more than at any other time and, crucially, when their brains establish learning pathways. They are receptive to God, to hearing him in ways that many of us have lost as we have grown up, and to having the sort of faith that Jesus wants us all to have.

July 2010 - Friends of God
God may seem to choose unlikely people to be leaders but he gives them the strength they need.
In this series we have four exciting stories about God’s people and the leaders that God gave them when they were in trouble. However, although the stories are exciting, telling them is not so easy for this age group. We may not be keen to introduce the children to the idea of people fighting and killing each other, especially as we want them to know God as a God of love. They are too young to understand the difference between a Christian understanding of who God is and the Old Testament concept of God as a God of war.
For this reason, the stories and activities are devised so that the children are able to learn of God’s power and his love. They will see that God wants a relationship with people because he loves them. He gives them leaders to help them, because he cares about their lives.
All of the leaders featured in this series are unlikely characters, but God’s choice goes beyond the obvious. (There are few women leaders like Deborah in the Old Testament records, Gideon was a very reluctant hero and Samson had physical strength, but little moral strength). Our children are aware of their smallness and weakness, so here is an opportunity to show that God can give us the strength and courage we need – even in the small ‘dramas’ of their everyday lives. They too can discover that God protects us because he loves us.
