How to make your Will

Making your Will – eight easy steps

It really is a simple thing to do, making your Will, and once it’s done you will have a great peace in knowing your affairs are in order for your family and friends.

  1. Decide that you are going to make your Will and act on it today.

Take time to consider the special responsibilities you have as a Christian. We recommend you use one of the following professional people as a Will is a legal document and just one small mistake could result in the whole Will being invalidated.

So, for peace of mind two professional options are open to you, using either 1. Your solicitor or 2. Your bank. We suggest you use your solicitor. If you don’t currently have a solicitor then we would recommend contacting one of the following Christian lawyer firms to find a local Christian solicitor in your area:

  1. Estimate the value of your estate (how much you are worth), then choose each of your beneficiaries and what their legacies will be. Remember the residue of the estate is particularly important here.
  2. Next, choose your executor(s) and witnesses and get their agreement to act.
  3. If you plan to include a legacy to Scripture Union, please contact Kathy Brooks our Legacy Officer to request a Legacy booklet or confirming your pledge by telephoning 01908 856124 or email her at legacy@scriptureunion.org.uk
  4. Make your Will, incorporating everything you have decided, making sure that it is correctly signed and witnessed.
  5. Keep your Will, and any other documents associated with it, in a safe place.
  6. Tell your executor(s) or another reliable person where your Will can be found.
  7. Make a note in your diary of when you need to review your Will and keep it up-to-date.
