Ukraine, bordering Russia, is the second largest country in Europe. It is a varied country with mountains in the west, plains in the centre and the Black Sea to the south. Its moderate climate makes it ideal for agriculture, especially cereal growing. For centuries Ukraine was dominated and fought over by a succession of powers but declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

Frontline

One of SU Ukraine’s key strategies in making the news of Jesus known is through summer camps held at their residential centre in the spa town of Vorzel near the Ukrainian capital Kiev.

Most of the children attending have little or no knowledge of the Christian faith. Activities include Bible studies, crafts, parachute games, small group work, singing and English lessons. The evening celebrations are also opportunities to have fun with the children. The team build good relationships with the children by entertaining them in drama, music or dance. And there are plenty of other ways to communicate with them, including sharing of personal stories.

Volunteers from the UK are needed to co-lead small groups of children or young people alongside a Ukrainian team member. There are no specific requirements for talents or skills but simply a love for God and a willingness to share your faith. The 2011 camp will be for 12-16 year olds though there is some flexibility about the age range!

‘The highlight of going to Ukraine was meeting new people from a different culture and environment - sharing a passion for God, being able to worship together and work as a team.’ Volunteer
