Slovakia, a fascinating landlocked region of central Europe, is known for its mountains, caves, medieval castles, spas and ski resorts. It’s a small country – but what it lacks in size it certainly makes up for in beauty. It became a sovereign state in 1992 following the end of Communist rule in 1989, and joined the EU in 2004.
Natalia Luptak of Scripture Union Slovakia says that children are attracted to the August camp by the well-planned programme, enthusiastic leaders and opportunity to improve their English.
And what attracts the team members from the UK?
‘They enjoy being with the kids, especially because they are so willing to speak English,’ says Natalia.
‘They also like being part of a young, energetic and sometimes crazy team – kids from our first camps have become our young leaders – and they enjoy the very relaxed environment. And they all love the Slovak countryside and Kofola – the best soft drink ever!’
Natalia and her team have been improving the programme since it started in 2001. She feels they now have the right combination of fun, games, sport, Bible stories, small group work, crafts and so on.
‘Three years ago we decided to make an evangelistic call at the end of the camp,’ adds Natalia. ‘It was a very powerful moment, seeing kids coming to Christ. So we have felt we should do this every camp – and every year since we have been blessed by powerful responses from the children.’
