After four decades of Communist rule, Hungary held its first multi-party elections in 1990, and a capitalist economy began to emerge. Over the past decade, this eastern European country has consistently featured among the world’s top 15 tourist destinations, with the capital Budapest regarded as one of the most beautiful cities on earth.
Working in summer clubs in Hungary is an exciting way of serving God and visiting this lovely country.
Volunteers are needed for one or more weeks to help teach the Bible and lead activities such as games, singing, crafts and sports. Frontline teams have been in Hungary every summer for nine years, working with children and young people aged 5 to 15, so plenty of experience goes into planning for every newcomer.
You don’t have to be a superhero! In fact, it’s strongly recommended that you don’t wear your pants outside your trousers! You don’t even have to speak Hungarian because you will work closely with a local team. In fact, speaking English will be a distinct advantage. You will be trained to teach in English language conversation clubs – an activity which often attracts children and young people with no church connections. ‘It was a fantastic opportunity to explore another country while serving God!’ said one Frontline volunteer. ‘I felt immersed in the Hungarian culture and language because I was living with the local team for three weeks. It was certainly the best way to see the country and understand it. The Hungarians I met were so friendly and helpful and the children were all so eager to learn. It was an absolutely marvellous experience! And I made so many friends.’
There will be a Frontline training day before the summer which is an important part of being on team. We try to hold it in a location central to those who are on team. In 2012 it will probably Saturday 26th May.
