John 9:24–34 The commissioning As you listen to this poem by Helen Paynter, reflect on what Jesus did for us by coming as the ‘Shepherd and Overseer of our souls’ (1 Peter 2:25).

The commissioning

My people need a shepherd –
they are scattered, lost, bewildered;
they need calling out;
they need to learn our voice.
Will you go?
Yes, my Father.

My people need a shepherd –
to lead them on the journey;
to show them a new horizon
they have never imagined.
Will you go?
Yes, my Father.

My people need a shepherd –
to guard them selflessly;
to stand between them and evil –
but oh, it will be costly!
Will you go?
Yes, my Father.

My people need a shepherd –
to draw them together
into one great, gathered flock,
united under one name, one Lord.
Will you go?
Yes, my Father.

My people need a shepherd –
who knows each sheep by name;
who spots the gap in the fold
and ventures after the missing one.
Will you go?
Yes, my Father.

My people need a shepherd –
who will not flinch from service;
who will love beyond the limit;
and who will lay down his life for them.
Will you go?
Yes, my Father.
